It's no good pretending that any relationship has a future if your record collections disagree violently or if your favorite films wouldn't even speak to each other if they met at a party.
-- Nick Hornby, High Fidelity
An Indie Girl's life is a Statement with a capital S, but unlike the Granola Girl, the statement is not political -- it's artistic. Indie Girls consider themselves actresses in the movie of life. Your meal needs to be constructed like an independent film. If you're bringing her over for a date, you are playing a character in her movie. If you create a setting, props, and a soundtrack that are good enough to avoid the cutting-room floor, she's yours.

You can boil the Indie Girl down to two words: cultural literacy. Or how about these two: media consumption. As the Gourmet Girl loves food and all that goes with it, the Indie Girl loves media: books, movies, music, and art. The good news is you don't have to be rich, good-looking, or famous to win this girl's heart. The bad news is she will judge you based on your music choices, the books you read, and the films you watch.

She Might Be a Indie Girl if:

She drives: a classic car, a VW beetle, a Mini Cooper, or a Vespa scooter.
She can talk for more than ten minutes about: obscure pop culture.
She begins her sentences with: "It's like that Simpsons episode . . ."
She'd never: drive a mini-van.
She owns any of the following: TiVo, a mini-DV camera, an iPod, a pottery wheel, a serger, or a lava lamp.

Do you know what love feels like?
I have an idea, sure, but no real definite experience to wholly back it up.

What's your biggest dream?
There are so many dreams that I've had: many have been thrown out or cast aside for the time being. My biggest dream? Who knows. Each day life surprises me; I suppose that's all I could ask for.

What are you looking for?
Nothing. If I were looking for something, it would force me to be taken out of what is. I am a firm believer that if you look for something, it will never come. Not to be cliche, but "a watched pot never boils." (which, doesn't really make sense b/c a watched pot DOES boil, but you all get the jist).

What do you believe in?
I believe in love and living every day to the fullest...in theory at least. As for religion: I do believe in a greater power/being/whatever you want to call it. I am, technically, Roman Catholic, but all religions intrigue me. I don't want to committ myself without believing it wholeheartedly.

Are you a good friend?
Sometimes. We all can be self-centered and not as empathatic as need be, but, in general, I think that there are those who I am there for and would consider me a good friend.

Do you let yourself cry?
Yes. Not often in front of people, but yeah.

Do you sing along with the radio?
Yes.

Can you tell a good hug from a bad one?
Sure. There's a feeling involved in a good one; in a bad one it's awkward and forced.

What's more important to you, money or people?
Duh. People.

Do you know what it is to give without taking?
I know what it means. Have I ever really experienced it? I don't know; somehow I don't think so. Maybe that makes me a bad person, who knows.

Have you ever had an entire conversation with someone just by looking into their eyes?
No. I've looked into someone's eyes for an entire conversation, and I've been able to tell what they're feeling just by their eyes, yes, but an entire conversation? I don't know if that's possible.

Do you compliment people?
Course. I have people very compliment-worthy in my life.

Do you care enough?
Depends on what we're talking about. I often believe that I care far too much.

Are you loved?
Yes. I am.

Do people care about you?
Yes. Certain people care very much for me. And I am so grateful for it.

Do you know how to listen?
Yes. Of course. Everyone knows how. I believe that I do listen if the skill is required.

Do you strive to learn new things?
Yes. I am such a nerd. I want to learn new things; experience it all. It's a burden and a blessing. I have so much useless knowledge cluttering up my mind, hopefully it will become useful someday.

Do you delight in meeting new people?
Yeah, I really do. It's so much fun. Whether or not I let them actually into my life is a different question. But it is fun to meet new people. So much possibility at the beginning of things.

What are you afraid of?
To die alone without anyone ever having loved me the way I loved them. And moths.

Are you willing to stand up for what you believe in?
Most of the time, yes. I mean, there are times where it is best to keep quiet. You have to weigh your options and the situation.

Are you willing to stand up for yourself?
Of course.

Are you willing to stand up for someone else?
Depends on the situation. I mean, everyone will answer the same way for this question though. You can't stand up for someone if you don't believe in what they are saying. But, yes, if need be, I probably would stand up for someone.

Are you willing to die for someone else?
I can theoretically say yes, but unless put into practice, I cannot answer truthfully.

Do you know how to relax?
Sure. Doesn't mean I do it, but yes, I know how to.

Do those you care about know how you feel?
No. Not really.

Are you ready to die right now?
No. However, I believe I have reached a point in my life where, if I were to die, I would be happy with what I have accomplished in my life thus far.

Are you living in the past?
Learning not to.

Are you an ass?
Haha, oh yes. Just ask my friends.

Can you express yourself?
Most of the time. It's hard. No one can truly, authentically express themselves 100% of the time.

Are you afraid of work?
No.

Are you willing to work for what you want?
Of course. If I weren't, then I better expect to never get what I want.

What do you want?
Same thing everyone wants: to be successful and feel complete. But, realistically speaking, I would like to write something amazing, and act in a major motion picture.

What do you need?
I don't need anything other than the basic necessities: food, water, clothing, and shelter.

Do you know the difference?
Of course. Want is not necessary to exist, need is.

What's the meaning of your life?
There is no underlying meaning to one's life. Why should I be seeking a greater purpose instead of enjoying what is in front of me? I suppose that's the "meaning": to enjoy it for what it is.

What do you value?
Love. Happiness. Family. Friendship. Truth. Beauty.

Do you live your life by the clock or by the moment?
I try to be a "by the moment," but sometimes the clock cannot be ignored.

Do you like yourself?
For the most part, yes. I have my moments where everything sucks, including myself. But, deep down, I think I'm a pretty good person.

Do you ever stop and notice what's going on around you?
Yes. A lot. It's distracting.

Do you laugh enough?
I could always use more laughter in my life.

Do you smile every day?
I try to. But who doesn't?
